Male Suicide in Late Life: A Past, Present, and Future Dilemma
September 13, 2023 @ 9:00 am - 11:30 am
Free
Join Tony Salvatore, Jennifer Haeussler-Barnhart, Bianca O’Connor, and the Montgomery County Suicide Prevention Task Force to discuss suicide prevention concerning those who make up the highest rate of suicide in our country…Males over 75!
It is generally known that adult men account for the majority of US suicides. It is far less known that older men, aged 75/over, have historically had the highest suicide rates in the US. This will continue as Baby Boomers age out and maybe beyond. Older adult suicide has been well-researched. The CDC has consistently highlighted the elevated rates of suicide in older men. Yet suicide prevention has given this problem little attention remaining focused on suicide in younger age groups. This program makes a case for changing this by (a) looking at older male suicide in terms of the data, the key risk and protective factors, and the principal psychosocial components driving suicidality in men in late life and (b) outlining actions that can be taken to deal with it at both the county and state levels in PA.
