Media and Safe Reporting on Suicide

This toolkit by the American Association of Suicidology provide updates from previously published national and international suicide reporting guidelines, along with updated recommendations for reporting on suicide using social media.  This guide is generated by extensive consultation with journalists and those with lived experience of suicide attempts and thoughts, contains critical information for all media professionals looking to effectively report on suicide as a topic.

This document offers evidence-based recommendations for creating safe and effective messages to raise public awareness that suicide is a serious and preventable public health problem. The following list of “Do’s” and “Don’ts” should be used to assess the appropriateness and safety of message content in suicide awareness campaigns. Recommendations are based upon the best available knowledge about messaging.
